Product Description #1 Choice of Physicians.* Quiet Care System: Up to 30% quieter than other air cleaner models of similar performance. Ture HEPA filter: HEPA media is at least 99.97%*** effective at capturing airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns that pass through the filter, such as: Pollen, Household Dust, Tobacco Smoke, Cat Dander & Mold Spores. Intelli-Check: Electronic filter change indicators. 6 Air Changes per hour in a 3.7 m x 4.3 m (12' x 14') Room. What Makes Honeywell's QuietCare Air Cleaner So Quiet? Sound reducing insulation. Patented air cleaner technology. Specially designed blade for maximum airflow and minimum noise. Specially designed air intake and exhaust grilles. Rubber isolated motor mount. Soft cushioned feet. How Quiet is Honeywell's QuietCare HEPA Air Cleaner? The Honeywell QuietCare HEPA Air Cleaner has been specially engineered to provide ultra quiet high speed operation. Independent testing shows that the QuietCare HEPA Air Cleaner is quieter on high than other HEPA and Non-HEPA air cleaners of similar performance. On higher speeds, air cleaners circulate more air through the filter, which may provide improved performance in all room sizes. How Can You Measure Sound? Sound can be measured in Sones. Sones take into account a sound's loudness (measured in decibels) and its frequency (how high or low it sounds) as perceived by the human ear. This is important because the human ear hears sound differently than do sound measuring devices, as certain frequencies of sound are more pleasant for us to hear than others. Using Sones, it is easy to compare how loud an appliance is against another - a Sone of 10 is half as loud as a Sone of 20. The American National Standards Institute standard, ANSI-S12.31-1990 is most suitable for measuring the sound of small appliances. Recommended by Physicians. Removing irritating airborne particulates and allergens may help reduce al
Amazon.com Review This portable air cleaner is recommended for filtering the air in a closed room as large as 168 square feet (12 by 14 feet). As it continuously circulates a room's air--about six times per hour--it employs two filters to remove smoke, pollen, dust, animal dander, dust mites, molds, bacteria, viruses, and odors. Especially useful for asthmatics and allergy sufferers, the cleaner contains a true HEPA filter that is at least 99.97 percent effective at trapping extremely tiny particles (as small as 0.3 microns) while a prefilter reduces odors. Honeywell's IntelliCheck system permits monitoring the filters' lives. Each filter has a button. Pressing a button activates a light, which blinks or shines steadily. One blink indicates that the filter has lots of life remaining, two blinks means less life, three blinks means even less, and a steady light indicates the filter needs changing. The HEPA filter lasts one to three years; the prefilter, three months. Filter replacement is simple, and replacement filters can be ordered separately. The air cleaner has three speeds, and all are exceptionally quiet for an air cleaner this large and powerful. It carries a five-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

Portable Air Cleaner with HEPA Filter is Whisper Soft March 17, 2001 Michela (Seattle, WA, USA) 247 out of 250 found this review helpful
As someone who is highly allergic to cigarette smoke and other air pollutants and irritants, I purchased a round Honeywell HEPA air filter when it first came on the market several years ago. It still works well in the living room, but it is quite noisy even on its lowest setting. This year I purchased another Honeywell air cleaner with a HEPA filter (Model 17400) for my bedroom because I had contacted bacterial pneumonia last year and wanted to make sure I did not get it again. Next, I purchased this Honeywell 17000 Air Cleaner (with HEPA filter) for use in a smaller bedroom which has been turned into a home office and library. These air cleaners really work! This winter I have not had a cold or flu. Also, this Honeywell Air Cleaner with HEPA filter is whisper soft, and I have had no problems with sleeping, working, reading, watching tv, or listening to music when it is running on the low and medium settings. I leave it on all the time, and I've found that it cleans the air best when the door is closed. It has a convenient handle on the top, so I can move it to another room quite easily. Also, it is light enough that I can take it with me in the car if I want to use it away from home. The prefilters last about 3-6 months, (and they can be vacuumed often if you have pets who shed). I change my HEPA filter every year, but you can wait 3 years to do so. These filters are easy to change. The Model 17000 is for a smaller room, and the Model 17400 is for a larger space. Highly recommended for anyone who has pets, who lives with or entertains people who smoke, and who is allergic to dust, molds, or pollens.
Why do people expect silence? December 2, 2006 H. Nelson 65 out of 67 found this review helpful
If you want a silent, useless air cleaner, go buy an overpriced oreck or sharper image unit. It will reduce things like smoke and tiny, tiny particles, but forget it getting rid of dust. I know, I had one. If you want a unit that actually "Filters" the air, buy this. Sure on Medium or High this unit will add background noise, but on low, it is hardly noticable if it's not right next to you. We noticed an immediate "crisp feel" to the air and huge reduction in dust in the air. My cough of 3 weeks is gone overnight. Coincidence.. I think not.
Don't read into the reviews that bash the noise.. Noise means it's working.
Does job well and does it quitely January 15, 2007 Jennifer Elkins (Dallas, TX United States) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This air purifier does a great job of filtering the air in our apartment. I am asthmatic. I bought two of these units, one for the bedroom, and one for the home office where my boyfriend smokes when the weather is too hot or too cold to go outdoors. He can smoke in his home office without triggering my asthma if he runs this purifier on the medium setting. Because I have asthma, I needed an air purifer without an ionizer, and I'm happy with this product. Ionizers produce ozone, which is harmful to the respiratory system, especially if you are asthmatic. A lot of popular air purifers are just ionizers that don't do a good job of filtering allergins, and many of the HEPA purifiers have an ionizer that works in conjunction with the HEPA. This unit does not contain an ionizer, and the HEPA is permanent so it can be cleaned. The pre-filter has to be replaced every 3-4 months, and the replacement is about ten dollars. This unit is quiet in comparison to its counterparts, but don't expect silence. It contains a motor with a fan to pull air through the filter, so it makes some noise. It's "white noise" and we were used to it after two days.
Reasonably quiet January 9, 2002 Lucy D. Robinson (Mercer Island, WA USA) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
I don't have another air cleaner to compare this to so my words may not be of much help. I bought this air cleaner used and I'm very happy with it. It's not too loud, I can sleep with it on even on medium. It definitely works, especially when I've blown out a bunch of scented candles and the room is filled with smoke. The smoke hangs in the room until I turn the air cleaner on then it's gone in what seems like minutes. I have asthma, cats, dogs and birds, and my alergies don't seem to bother me much at all since I have had this air cleaner.
A lifesaver! July 4, 2006 Apple Pie 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I recently purchased this air purifier from my local Target store and I couldn't be happier with my purchase! I have been waking up with terrible headaches and stuffy noses due to allergies (the pollen count has been outrageous where I live due to very little rainfall in the past few months). My doctor recommended that I look into air purifiers and that could easily solve my allergy problems without having to pop pills everyday.
The very FIRST night I used the machine, I noticed waking up without any problems. No stuffy nose...no headache! I leave it on all day in my bedroom on the LOW setting, and I find that the noise is nothing like other reviewers are saying. It really is whisper quiet. Of course, there is a slight hum of the fan, but it is in no way bothersome.
If you are looking for an air purifier that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, look no further. This thing WORKS, it is AFFORDABLE, permanent HEPA filter, and QUIET. All pros in my book!
